Understanding Myotherapy: Techniques and Tools for Soft Tissue Integrity and Pain Management.

Myotherapy uses a range of physical modalities with the intent to restore and maintain integrity of the soft tissue structures of the human body. Myotherapists locate, assess and treat lesions such as abnormal motor patterns, myofascial trigger points and adhesions within muscle and connective tissue. These lesions can adversely affect range of movement, flexibility, strength and efficiency of muscle action. They may also cause myofascial pain syndromes with accompanying tenderness both locally and in a characteristic pain pattern. In order to deactivate these muscle lesions your myotherapist may choose a number of techniques and tools such as:

  • Soft tissue manipulation
  • TENS Therapy
  • Dry Needling
  • Myofascial Stretching
  • Cupping Therapy
  • Joint Mobilisation
  • Corrective Exercises

These modalities are applied in the preventive, corrective and rehabilitative phases of therapy.

The treatment provided by your myotherapist is complementary to that provided by other allied health practitioners, and may be used with other forms of treatment, either medical, physical or psychological.
